SSH Internal Funding Opportunities

Internal funding opportunities exist to enhance UBC researchers' success applying for funding from social sciences and humanities competitions.

Hampton Fund Programs

The Hampton Fund programs reflect a new strategy at the VPRI/SPARC offices to establish multiple research funding streams to enhance UBC researchers' success with SSHRC and other major social sciences and humanities (SSH) funding competitions.

To achieve this overall objective, the programs aim to:

  • Provide co-funding to researchers applying to SSHRC competitions for which they are expected to seek or secure contributions from host institutions and other organizations
  • Provide seed funding for early stage of smaller-scale research for both junior and established scholars
  • Provide support for knowledge mobilization, research training, and/or student mentoring
  • Encourage researchers to utilize SPARC support

Bridge Funding Program

The Office of the Vice-President of Research and Innovation (VPRI) in partnership with the Support Programs to Advance Research Capacity (SPARC) is pleased to introduce a pilot Bridge Funding Program to support researchers that wish to improve and re-submit applications that were unsuccessful in the preceding Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) competition cycle:

Guidelines
  • VPRI awards have a maximum value of $2,500 and must be matched by UBC Faculty Depts/Units.
  • Awards are for a maximum duration of 1 year. There is no funding extension beyond that time.
  • Researchers may only receive Bridge Funding twice for each SSHRC competition.
  • Allowable expenses are outlined in the Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide. Eligibility questions may be directed to the SPARC contact of the corresponding SSHRC program as listed below.
  • A mandatory progress meeting to provide additional feedback and support to applicants must be scheduled with SPARC, and if applicable, with your grant facilitator, prior to the corresponding SSHRC program's application submission deadline in 2016-2017.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Matching funds must be approved by the faculty member's Head of Department of appropriate contact with a signed Research Project Information Form (RPIF) before applying for the Bridge Funding Program.
  • Applications for the Bridge Funding Program must be from an application to SSHRC adjudicated in a previous year that will be re-submitted to the following SSHRC competition cycle.
  • Approval of applications to the Bridge Funding Program is subject to availability of funds.

SSHRC Institutional Grants (SIG)

Through its SSHRC Institutional Grants (SIG) funding opportunity, SSHRC provides annual block grants to help eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions fund small-scale research and research-related activities by their faculty in the social sciences and humanities. SIG grants are intended to help Canadian postsecondary institutions develop, maintain or strengthen research capacity and research excellence in the social sciences and humanities.

SIG funds may be used to:

  • assist social sciences and humanities researchers with modest research funding requirements;
  • support national and international knowledge mobilization within and/or beyond the research community; and
  • support the development of students.

SSHRC expects that all SIG-funded research training will incorporate appropriate dimensions of the Guidelines for Effective Research Training.
